After receiving a 15 game suspension from the MLB, Jeurys Familia started his 2017 season in the Mets’ minor league system which included a stop in Binghamton to play for the Mets’ AA affiliate, the Rumble Ponies.

Familia was suspended for violating the league’s personal conduct policy, regarding a domestic violence incident in October of last year. Familia was arrested but all charges were dropped due to a lack of evidence and the arrest has been expunged from his record.

Familia threw just nine pitches for the Rumble Ponies on Monday night. That was all the all-star needed to get out out the sixth inning, inducing two groundouts and one strikeout.

“I feel great,” Familia said after the game. “It felt good to get my rhythm going. It feels good. For me, it’s something- I can’t wait to be with my teammates in New York again.”

Familia just wants to put his suspension behind him and start playing baseball in the majors again.

“I mean, theres nothing I could do,” Familia said. “Everything happens for a reason. I pray for my family, everyone knows what happened and I can’t wait to be with my teammates again.”

Familia was the closer for the Mets last season but since his suspension Addison Reed has taken over the closing duties. Familia feels like he is ready to assume that role again after recording a team-record and MLB leading 51 saves last year.

“Oh, yea. I’m ready. I went back to the Dominican Republic to work at the Academy, then I went to Port St. Lucie to train more there and threw a couple innings. I’m ready to go.”

Mets manager Terry Collins stated that may keep Reed in the closer role for a few days after Familia comes back to get him acclimated.

“That’s good,” Familia said. “I’ve been gone for two weeks and it’ll be good for me throw a few innings up there.”

After coming up through the Mets’ system, Familia is familiar with the Binghamton area and was happy to be back.

“I remember how to drive here,” Familia said while chuckling. “It’s good, they have a good team here. I remember mostly everything.”

The Mets activated Familia on Thursday and he pitched in the ninth.
