Canton hears about funding situation

CANTON - The governor has rolled out a new acronym for school districts across Pennsylvania.

During Thursday's Canton Area School Board meeting, the school board heard about the Student Achievement Education Block Grant.

District business manager Mark Jannone informed school directors about the appropriation, which is the governor's new funding formula for school districts.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE), the Governor's 2012-2013 Executive Budget includes $6,516,087,000 for SAEBG. It incorporates basic education funding and reimbursements for student transportation and school employees' Social Security.

In Canton, the governor proposes the same amount of basic education funding for next year at $6.6 million.

When increases in amounts for Social Security and transportation are taken into account along with expenses, the district is looking at a net increase of $31,000 in its SAEBG, Jannone said.

With all the massive cuts in education last year, the governor "shocked us into submission," Jannone noted. So, he said, the district is happy with the allocation it is facing and will have "to make do."

But he was concerned about the "financial storm" that he said is just beginning.
