New auction house opens up in Tioga Center, N.Y.

"We needed a place to call home, so we decided to take a leap of faith and open our own place," Adam Cole said. He was talking about his newly opened business, Cole Auction located at 3000 Route 17C in Tioga Center, N.Y. Cole had been holding auctions on his own in rented spaces for some time, and works as an auctioneer at Bostwick Auctions located at 1121 Route 96 in Candor, N.Y.

The call and the bid are ingrained in Cole. "My grandfather Cliff Newman was in the business for 50 years," Cole said. "He held auctions all over the Northeast. He's a member of the Auctioneer's Hall of Fame."

Cole recalled that when he was in kindergarten he would sit on his grandfather's lap and call an auction or two. During a June 2 auction in Cole Auction's new home he carried on the family tradition.

Caleb Cole, age 6, climbed up on his father's knee and quietly listened for several auctions before his father took off his headset microphone and placed it on his son. Caleb called two auctions, one of a tackle box and one of a set of trays before giving the microphone back to his father. After his performance Caleb scampered down from the auction platform and went running off with the other children at the auction.

Every two weeks Adam Cole hopes to hold his own auction, and grow his business with his wife Danielle in their new auction hall. "It's a family run business," Danielle said. "We're happy to be here and excited to get going." The Cole's recently closed on their new digs in Tioga Center, and welcomed a sizable crowd of auction aficionados during last Sunday's auction.

"I sell with him a lot," local businessman Corey Relyea said of Cole. "He's a good auctioneer, definitely smooth," Relyea added. But it's not just a chance to get that piece of furniture or lamp or find a hidden treasure among the tables of goods Cole offered up for auction that brings people to the auction.

Back Road B.B.Q. is a side business Cole runs with Dale Wildenstein, and offers burgers, hot dogs, and other snacks for patrons during the auction. Besides serving up goodies at the auction, Back Road B.B.Q. also caters parties, weddings, and any other event that people want some homestyle cooking at without all the work.

Other specialties sometimes served during that auction, and on request during catering jobs, are chicken spiedies, pork sandwiches, even ribs, according to Wildenstein. "Just tell us what you want and how many people we need to cook for, and we'll give you a price," Wildenstein said. He added that the catering business slows down during the winter, although they are a year-round food service. "The cold doesn't bother us," Wildenstein said.

Cole Auction always accepts consignments, Cole said, which can be picked up or dropped off by appointment. Cole Auction can be reached at (607) 761-9775 to schedule a pick-up or drop-off of goods you'd like to put up for auction. Besides the above number, for more information about the auction you can log onto auctionzip.com and enter Cole Auction's number, 27820. Cole said he updates the information and images on the website right up to auction time so buyers can see some of the stuff for sale during the next auction.
