Waverly boys and girls take second at track and field class sectional meet

The Waverly boys and girls track and field teams each took second at their class sectional meet on Friday night.

The boys fell one point short of Trumansburg with Trumansburg winning at 91, followed by Waverly at 90, Lansing at 72, BGA at 44, Notre Dame at 34 and Watkins Glen at 29.

"It was a tough one for the guys," Waverly coach Scott Baird said. "I'm proud of them. They fought all the way until the end."

Nick Puusalu won the 55 in 6.81 and Sean Swartwood won the 600 in a season-best 1:25.85, while Dan Hyland took fifth in a season-best 1:33.74.

In the 3200, Randy Chandler took fifth in a season-best 11:13.08 and in the 55 hurdles Cole Mensch took second in 8.43, while Jon Puusalu finished fifth in a season-best 9.37.

In the 300, Swartwood won in a season-best 37.53 and Nick Puusalu won the long jump at 20-feet, 7 1/2-inches, while Rich Northrop took third in the triple jump at a season-best 36-feet, 3-inches.

Mensch won the high jump at 5-feet, 6-inches and Dustyn Mack took fifth in the shot with a season-best 36-feet, 7 3/4-inches.

In the 3200 rela,y Chandler, Jeff Czediniack, Mike Horrocks and JOn Puusalu finished fifht in 9:40 and in the 800 relay Mensch, Nick Puusalu, Hyland and Swartwood won in 1:36.28.

In the 600, Hyland finished fifth in 1:33.74 and Nick Keane, Coby Quinn, Brian Schlicher and Northrop finished second in the 1600 relay in 3:58.25.

For the girls Trumansburg won at 137, followed by Waverly at 79. Newfield was at 45, Notre Dame at 44, Marathon at 42 and Lansing had 29.

Stephanie Shaffer finished second with a season-best 9:43.36 in the 1500 race walk and in the 600 Kaylee Uhl won with a season-best 1:41.32.

Sydney Shaffer finished second in the 55 hurdles in a season-best 10.14 and Shelby Tubbs was fourth in the event in 10:35.

In the 1600, Katelyn Moore finished fifth with a season-best 5:28.23 and in the 300 Lea McMahon finished fourth in 45.83, while Danielle Burkhart was fifth at 46.52.

In the long jump, Sabrina Emms won at 16-feet, 5 3/4-inches and Sydney Shaffer finished fifth in the pole vault with a season-best 7-feet, 6-inches.

In the shot, Sarah Rote finished sixth in 26-feet, 3 3/4-inches. In the 3200 relay, Moore, Kayla Rogers, Stephanie Serafin and Daylen Smith finished second in 11:45.77 and in the 800 relay, Uhl, Emms, McMahon and Burkhart won in 1:53.47, while the same four won the 1600 relay in 4:25.06.
